Beyond Hype: The Real Friction Between AI and Medical Devices

Tension between AI and medical technology is no longer theoretical – his is an ongoing discussion amongst specialists from AI, classical IT, manufacturers, clinicians and regulators. What are the key issues to be considered?

AI reshapes devices and organisations

Artificial intelligence is transforming medical devices and the companies behind them. Value chains, responsibilities and decision-making shift as AI moves from prototypes into regulated products, while core contradictions bleiben: cybersecurity versus safety, explainability versus scarce labelled data, regulation versus innovation speed.

AI often enters organisations through the side door. Unregistered tools on laptops and automatic updates can route patient-related data to servers outside the EU, so GDPR- and MDR-relevant information leaves the European legal space silently – without any explicit decision.

Cybersecurity: more than compliance

Real cases already show how vulnerable MedTech can be: insecure radio interfaces, missing encryption, manipulable ventilators. Compliance checklists are not enough; narrowing the system scope creates dangerous blind spots. Security must be a management decision from day one, supported by actively testing one’s own products.

Excessive or poorly designed security can itself create clinical risk. Complex encryption on battery-powered pumps may shorten runtime and delay drug delivery, and additional logins at critical consoles can cost seconds when they matter most. Safety and performance must remain paramount.

AI is not causal – and Europe’s opportunity

AI recognises patterns; it does not understand causes. Explainable, clinically meaningful use therefore relies on high-quality labelled data and close collaboration between clinicians and developers across disciplines.

If Europe turns its focus on explainability and robust certification into a “TÜV for embedded AI”, it can shape safe, trustworthy AI in MedTech. If it hesitates, it will import solutions developed elsewhere – and lose the chance to define the standard.
